The Beyond the Shell Project is focused on accessible scientific communication and cultural outreach.

The project started with a documentary, Beyond the Shell (as seen on PBS), produced in the Advanced Laboratory for Visual Anthropology by Alexandria Firenzi, Stacey Jones, Dan Bruns, Brian Brazeal, and collaborators. The film focuses on the ecology and culture of a scarce marine resource, red abalone (Haliotis rufescens).

The project continues in a variety of ways including: The Abalone Collective, Beyond the Shell Events, and Instagram (@Beyond_The_Shell). Our Instagram page includes ways to get involved, updates on The Abalone Collective, and weekly educational “Rufus the Rufescens” cartoon strips which are also viewable on our website.
